Tarlov cysts are a rare condition where there are fluid-filled sacs affecting the roots of the spine. The area most affected is the base of the spine around the sacral region. Symptoms include pain in the affected nerves, neuropathic (nerve) pain, numbness and altered sensation, an inability to control bladder and bowel movements (incontinence), impotence, and, rarely, weakness in the legs. The precise cause of Tarlov cysts is unknown, but some theorize that it results from an injury causing a leaking of cerebrospinal fluid or an inflammatory process within the nerve root sheath.
Cannabis may help treat many of the symptoms associated with Tarlov cysts, including nerve pain, inflammation and incontinence.
